Replacements

Listings that take over the same core job as FCEUX.

  • Mesen

    Cycle-accurate multi-system emulator with a serious debugger.

Mesen offers cycle-accurate emulation of several systems with a strong debugger under GPL-3.0, though its accuracy costs more CPU than fast emulators.

  • BizHawk

A multi-system emulator built for tool-assisted speedrunning, with rewinding, frame stepping, memory search and input recording.

BizHawk brings TAS tools, rewind, frame stepping and memory search across many systems, but it is Windows and Linux only and its dense interface targets TAS work.

  • RetroArch

One front end for dozens of emulators, with unified settings, shaders and a controller setup you only do once.

RetroArch runs NES cores within one front end with shaders, rewind and Android and iOS support, but does not list FCEUX's debugger and Lua movie tools.

  • puNES

A Qt-based Nintendo Entertainment System emulator that also plays NSF, NSF2 and NSFe music files.

puNES is a Qt-based NES emulator with wide mapper support and an NSF music player, but runs on Linux, BSD and Windows only and is described as a work in progress.

  • MAME

Documents and recreates thousands of arcade machines, consoles and old computers, with accuracy as the point.

MAME covers thousands of consoles, computers and arcade machines with accuracy as its priority and monthly releases, but needs exact ROM sets and has no TAS focus.
