Alternatives to PCSX-Redux

A PlayStation 1 emulator forked from PCSX, built with debugging and reverse engineering tools. The listings below can replace it for an important use case. Each note says what changes if you switch.

Replacements

Listings that take over the same core job as PCSX-Redux.

  • DuckStation

A fast, accuracy-focused PlayStation 1 emulator. Excellent software, but licensed non-commercial and no-derivatives.

DuckStation targets accurate play with hardware renderers and upscaling rather than development tools, and its CC BY-NC-ND licence means it is not open source.

  • Mednafen

Command-line multi-system emulator covering Saturn, PlayStation and more.

Mednafen covers PlayStation alongside Saturn and other systems, but it is driven from the command line with a text configuration file instead of a debugging interface.

  • PCSX-ReARMed

A PlayStation emulator forked from PCSX-Reloaded and optimized for ARM devices and handhelds.

    FreeProprietaryLinux

PCSX-ReARMed is another PCSX fork, optimized for ARM handhelds and low-power devices, and is mostly distributed as source or through frontends rather than as a desktop app.

  • BizHawk

A multi-system emulator built for tool-assisted speedrunning, with rewinding, frame stepping, memory search and input recording.

BizHawk adds memory search, frame stepping and input recording across many systems, though it runs only on Windows and Linux and its cores are less accurate.

  • RetroArch

One front end for dozens of emulators, with unified settings, shaders and a controller setup you only do once.

RetroArch runs PlayStation through downloadable cores in a unified front end with shaders and controller setup, but it lacks PCSX-Redux's PS1 development tools.
