About Aegis Authenticator
Aegis fixes the two things that go wrong with authenticator apps: the vault is properly encrypted with AES-256-GCM, unlocked with a password using scrypt or with biometrics through the Android Keystore, and backups are a first-class feature with automatic exports to a location you choose.
It supports HOTP and TOTP, so it works with the thousands of services that use standard two-factor codes, and it is compatible with Google Authenticator. Importing from other apps is unusually thorough: 2FAS, Authenticator Plus, Authy, andOTP, FreeOTP, FreeOTP+, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Steam, TOTP Authenticator and WinAuth, though some of those need root.
Organisation features include groups, custom or automatically generated icons, alphabetic or custom sorting and search, with screen capture prevention and tap-to-reveal for shoulder surfing.
Strengths
- The vault is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, unlocked by password with scrypt or by biometrics
- Automatic backups of the vault to a location you choose, plain or encrypted
- Imports from 2FAS, Authy, andOTP, FreeOTP, Google and Microsoft Authenticator and more
- Screen capture prevention and tap-to-reveal, with groups, icons and search
Limitations
- Android only
- No cloud sync; you own the backup process
- Some imports from other apps require root access
- Losing both the password and the backup means losing the tokens
