About AFWall+

AFWall+ writes iptables rules on a rooted device to control which applications may use which network types, operating at the kernel level rather than through the VPN service. Rules can cover Wi-Fi, mobile data, roaming, LAN, VPN and tethering separately.

Strengths

  • Kernel-level filtering, so it does not consume the VPN slot
  • Very granular rules per network type, including tethering and LAN

Limitations

  • Requires root
  • Rule sets get complicated quickly and misconfiguration silently breaks apps
