About Amanda
Amanda, the Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver, backs up many clients to a single server holding tape or disk storage, using native tools such as tar and dump on each client so archives remain readable without Amanda itself. It has been developed since 1991.
Strengths
- Archives are written with standard tar or dump, so they are readable without Amanda
- Balances daily full and incremental runs across clients automatically
Limitations
- Configuration is dense and the documentation assumes Unix experience
- The interface is entirely command line
