About Apache HTTP Server
Apache httpd serves HTTP and HTTPS through a module system that covers rewriting, authentication, proxying, caching and scripting language integration, with per-directory configuration through .htaccess files. It has been maintained since 1995 and runs on Unix-likes and Windows.
Strengths
- Huge module ecosystem and decades of documented configuration
- Per-directory .htaccess overrides suit shared hosting
Limitations
- Higher memory use per connection than event-driven servers
- Default configurations are spread across many files and vary by distribution
