About Blockbench
Blockbench is aimed at a specific corner of 3D: blocky, low-polygon models with pixel-art textures. It handles boxes, meshes, texture painting, UV mapping, animation and keyframes, and exports to standard formats for rendering, 3D printing or a game engine.
Its Minecraft support is what most people come for, with dedicated Java and Bedrock Edition project types that understand each one's quirks. The interface is deliberately beginner-friendly but has depth underneath, and plugins extend it further. There is also a browser version if you do not want to install anything.
Strengths
- Dedicated project formats for Minecraft Java and Bedrock with format-specific features
- Texture painting, UV mapping and keyframe animation in the same app as the modelling
- Runs in a browser as well as on Windows, macOS and Linux
- Plugin system for extra formats and tools
Limitations
- Built for low-poly work; it is not a general 3D modeller
- Sculpting, physics and rendering are out of scope
- Minecraft format support tracks a moving target and occasionally lags an update
- Electron, so it is a heavier download than the models it produces
