About CherryTree
CherryTree organises notes as a tree, so a project can have nested nodes many levels deep rather than a flat list. Nodes hold rich text with the usual formatting plus headings, subscript and monospace, or code with syntax highlighting for a long list of languages.
It goes further than most note apps on embedded content: images you can resize and rotate, LaTeX maths equations, embedded files saved to disk, simple tables with CSV import and export, and codeboxes, which are blocks of syntax-highlighted plain text inside a rich text node. Code in a code node can actually be executed, with a configurable terminal per language.
Storage is a single XML or SQLite file, or multiple files and directories, and the file can be password protected.
Strengths
- Hierarchical nodes, so deep structures stay organised rather than flat
- Rich text and syntax-highlighted code in the same document, including codeboxes
- LaTeX equations, resizable images, embedded files and CSV tables
- Stores in a single XML or SQLite file, or a folder tree, with optional password protection
Limitations
- No official macOS build
- No built-in sync; you supply Syncthing, Nextcloud or similar
- The single-file format is not plain text, so it is less portable than Markdown
- The GTK interface looks dated on Windows
