About Conductor

Conductor is a workflow orchestration engine originally built at Netflix and now maintained as an open-source project. It runs long-lived, event-driven workflows for applications and AI agents with durable, resilient execution, so steps survive failures and restarts.

You run the server yourself, and the repository includes Docker setups and modules for storage and queues such as Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Amazon S3 and SQS, Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage and AMQP. It suits engineering teams coordinating many services or agent steps.

Strengths

  • Durable, fault-tolerant workflow execution
  • Designed for both services and AI agents
  • Many storage and queue backends
  • Docker setups included

Limitations

  • A server platform that takes effort to deploy and operate
  • Aimed at developers, not end users

Alternatives to Conductor

Compare all

Software that can replace Conductor for an important use case, and what changes if you switch.

  • Trigger.dev

An open-source platform for durable background jobs, scheduled tasks and AI agents written in TypeScript.

Trigger.dev offers durable background jobs, scheduled tasks and AI agents with built-in retries and queues, but it is TypeScript-first and has a freemium hosted option alongside documented self-hosting.

  • Kestra

An open-source declarative orchestration platform for scheduled and event-driven workflows, self-hosted or in the cloud.

Kestra uses declarative workflows with scheduled and event-driven triggers and more than 2,000 plugins, runs self-hosted or in the cloud, and keeps some features for enterprise plans.

  • Windmill

An open-source, self-hostable platform for turning scripts into workflows, internal apps and scheduled jobs.

Windmill turns scripts in TypeScript, Python, Go, Bash and other languages into workflows, APIs and scheduled jobs, adds internal apps, and ties some features to an enterprise edition.

  • Flyte

An open-source orchestration platform for durable data, machine learning and AI agent workflows written in Python.

Flyte orchestrates durable data, ML and AI agent workflows written in plain Python, recovers from failures, and includes a local devbox with a web UI; Flyte 1 users must migrate.

  • Prefect

A workflow orchestration tool for scheduling, retrying and observing Python data and ML pipelines.

Prefect defines flows with Python decorators, includes retries, scheduling and a run history dashboard, and places some features in its paid hosted platform, so it suits Python-centred teams.

  • Apache Airflow

A self-hosted platform for writing, scheduling and monitoring workflows defined as Python code.

Apache Airflow schedules workflows written as Python code with a web UI for task status and logs, scaling across workers, though you maintain the scheduler, workers and web server yourself.

  • StackStorm

A self-hosted, event-driven automation platform that connects apps and services through rules and workflows.

StackStorm is a free, self-hosted, event-driven automation platform with rules and multi-step workflows, aimed at operations teams responding to infrastructure events rather than application or AI agent orchestration.
