About DeepGit

DeepGit is built for Git archaeology: answering why a piece of code is there. It is based on git blame and lets you follow the history of a line or block back through earlier commits. It also detects code that was moved, even when the lines are not identical.

It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and can be wired into IDEs that support external tools, such as Eclipse, Visual Studio and IntelliJ IDEA, and into editors like Sublime Text. It comes from syntevo, the maker of SmartGit.

Strengths

  • Detects moved code even when lines changed
  • Free for commercial use
  • Integrates with IDEs as an external tool

Limitations

  • Focused on history investigation, not a full Git client
  • Closed source
