About direnv
direnv reads an .envrc file when you enter a directory and applies its environment, then reverts it when you leave, so per-project variables, paths and tool versions never leak between projects. Each .envrc must be explicitly allowed before it runs.
Strengths
- Per-project environment without cluttering your shell profile
- Every .envrc must be explicitly approved before it is executed
Limitations
- Executing files found in a directory is inherently risky if approvals are careless
- Needs a hook added to each shell
