About DNSViz
DNSViz shows the status of a DNS zone, with a focus on DNSSEC. Enter a domain on the website and it draws the DNSSEC authentication chain and the resolution path through the DNS namespace. It also lists the configuration errors it detects.
The tool suite that powers the website is open source. You can install it from the package repositories of Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo and FreeBSD, or from EPEL on RHEL and CentOS. On macOS it is available through Homebrew or MacPorts, and it can also run in a Docker container. The installed version supports testing a zone before it is deployed.
Strengths
- Graphs the DNSSEC chain of trust in a way that is easy to follow
- Lists detected configuration errors
- Command-line suite can test zones before deployment
- Packaged for major Linux distributions and macOS
Limitations
- Focused on DNSSEC rather than general DNS or mail checks
- The graphs take some DNS knowledge to read
