About draw.io
draw.io is the diagramming tool most people reach for when they need a flowchart, a network diagram, a UML sketch or an org chart. The desktop build wraps the same editor in Electron and works entirely offline, storing files wherever you put them, which the project summarises as not being able to access your data at all.
It handles the usual shape libraries, plus AWS, Azure, Cisco and Kubernetes icon sets, and saves in an XML format that is also readable by the web version and by Confluence and Jira plugins.
On Windows three builds are published and the difference matters: an NSIS installer that installs per-machine and needs administrator rights, an MSI that installs per-user and does not, and a portable build that needs neither. There are native ARM64 builds too.
Strengths
- Works entirely offline with files stored locally, so nothing is uploaded
- Large shape libraries including AWS, Azure, Cisco and Kubernetes icon sets
- Per-user MSI and portable builds for Windows machines without administrator rights
- Native ARM64 builds for Windows on Arm
Limitations
- Electron, so it is heavy for a diagram editor
- No real-time collaboration in the desktop build
- Large diagrams get sluggish
- The three different Windows installers are confusing until you read the notes
