About Explorer++

Explorer++ is a small, fast file manager that adds what Explorer has long lacked: proper tabs you can bookmark, a display pane showing a preview of the selected file, filtering, and advanced file operations including merging and splitting files and changing dates and attributes in bulk.

It can save its settings to a configuration file rather than the registry, which makes it genuinely portable on a USB stick. Drag and drop works fully with other applications including Explorer itself, and there are 32-bit, 64-bit and ARM64 builds. The last tagged release was January 2024.

Strengths

  • Tabbed browsing with bookmarkable tabs, which Explorer only gained much later
  • Completely portable when configured to save settings to a file rather than the registry
  • Advanced operations including merging and splitting files and bulk attribute changes
  • 32-bit, 64-bit and ARM64 builds

Limitations

  • Windows only
  • The last tagged release is from January 2024
  • Single-pane rather than a dual-pane commander layout
  • Does not replace the Explorer shell itself, only the file browsing window
