About Ferdium

Ferdium is a hard fork of Franz, made because Franz put features behind a paid account. It puts your messaging services, WhatsApp Web, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Teams, Gmail and hundreds more, into a single application with a service sidebar, so you are not keeping fifteen browser tabs open.

Workspaces group services so you can switch between a work set and a personal set, and a Todos panel stays open alongside. Ferdium adds features Franz did not have and removes the usage restrictions; it remains compatible with an existing Franz account if you are migrating.

Each service is a web view, so this is fundamentally a specialised browser: memory use scales with how many services you keep loaded.

Strengths

  • Hundreds of services supported, with workspaces to group them
  • No paid account or usage restrictions, unlike the Franz it forked from
  • Compatible with an existing Franz account for people migrating
  • Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD builds, with custom CSS styling supported

Limitations

  • Each service is a web view, so memory use grows quickly with many services
  • Service integrations break when a provider changes its web app
  • Notifications can be less reliable than a native app for the same service
  • It cannot add features a service's web version does not have
