About FIRECalc

FIRECalc is a web-based retirement calculator that tests a spending plan against historical market data instead of average returns. You enter a portfolio size and a yearly withdrawal. It then runs the plan from every starting year since 1871 to show whether the money would have lasted, including through bad periods such as 1929 and 1973.

It is aimed at people considering early retirement. There are sections for other income and spending, spending models, portfolio settings and portfolio changes over time. The market data was last updated in April 2026.

Strengths

  • Tests plans against every historical start year since 1871
  • Shows worst-case outcomes rather than averages
  • Options for other income, spending models and portfolio changes
  • Data updated in 2026

Limitations

  • Assumes future markets resemble the past
  • Plain, dated interface
  • Built around US retirement accounts and Social Security
