About f.lux
f.lux was the program that made screen colour temperature a mainstream concern. It makes your display match the time of day: daylight-balanced during the day, warm at night to match indoor lighting, transitioning gradually so you do not notice it happening.
The argument is partly comfort, screens being uncomfortably bright in a dark room, and partly sleep, since evening blue light suppresses melatonin. The project maintains a research page for the underlying evidence.
It is free for macOS and free for personal use on Windows, with a separate Corporate Edition and site licences for business use, and a Linux build. It is closed source. Note that operating systems now ship their own versions of this feature, Night Light on Windows and Night Shift on macOS, which are less configurable but built in.
