GitVersion reads a repository's commit history, branches and tags and works out a Semantic Versioning number for the current build, so version numbers do not have to be set by hand. Its behaviour is configured with a GitVersion.yml file in the repository.
It is mostly used in build scripts and continuous integration pipelines, where the calculated version can be stamped into packages and release artifacts. The project is developed in the open on GitHub with a long commit history and an active codebase.
