GNU Binutils is a set of tools for working with compiled programs. The main ones are ld, the GNU linker, as, the GNU assembler, and gold, a faster linker for ELF files. Alongside them are utilities such as objdump, readelf, nm, strings, strip, objcopy, ar and c++filt for inspecting symbols, sections and archives.
It also includes profiling tools (gprof and gprofng) and helpers for Windows formats such as dlltool. Binutils forms part of the standard toolchain for compiling native software and suits developers who need to examine or manipulate executables.
Strengths
- Includes the GNU linker and assembler used in native toolchains
- Wide set of inspection tools such as objdump, readelf and nm
- Profiling tools included with gprof and gprofng
Limitations
- Command-line only, aimed at developers familiar with object file formats
- Distributed as source releases; most people install it through a package manager
