About Hyper-V

Hyper-V is the hypervisor included with Windows Server and with Windows 10 and 11. As a type-1 hypervisor it runs directly on the hardware, giving virtual machines near-native performance and strong isolation from the host.

On a desktop it is turned on as a Windows feature rather than downloaded separately, and it runs isolated Windows or Linux guests. It suits Windows users and administrators who want virtual machines without installing a third-party virtualization product.

Strengths

  • Built into Windows with nothing extra to buy
  • Type-1 hypervisor with near-native performance
  • Runs both Windows and Linux guests
  • Scales from a desktop to Windows Server

Limitations

  • Not available on Windows Home editions
  • Windows only
  • Can conflict with other hypervisors on the same machine
