imgproxy processes images on request, so a web application does not need to prepare every size and format in advance. Processing options and the output format go in the image URL. The open-source edition handles resizing, cropping, rotating, watermarking, filters, metadata stripping and formats including WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL.
It ships as Docker images and Linux packages and works with your own image storage. A paid Pro edition adds object detection, video and PDF previews, and advanced compression.
Strengths
- Processing options are set directly in the image URL
- Supports modern formats such as WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL
- Runs on your own infrastructure with your own storage
- Widely used and actively maintained
Limitations
- Some features such as object detection and video previews are Pro only
- Intended for developers integrating it into a site, not for editing single images
