About Jami
Jami is distributed rather than hosted: there is no central server relaying messages or calls between users. Accounts are cryptographic identities created on your device, and no phone number or email is required to make one. Multiple devices can be linked to the same account.
It does instant messaging, audio and video calls, group chats, video conferences and rendezvous points with no third-party hosting, audio and video message recording, screen sharing and media streaming. It can also act as a SIP client, and an extension platform allows plugins. It is a GNU project backed by the Free Software Foundation and developed by Savoir-faire Linux.
The trade-off of being fully peer to peer is that reliability depends on both parties being reachable, and messages to an offline device wait until it comes back.
Strengths
- Completely peer to peer, with no server relaying data between users
- No phone number or email needed to create an account
- Messaging, calls, video conferences, screen sharing and SIP client in one app
- A GNU project backed by the Free Software Foundation
Limitations
- Peer-to-peer delivery means messages to an offline device wait until it reconnects
- Connection reliability varies more than with a server-relayed service
- Smaller user base, so most of your contacts will not be on it
- Account recovery depends entirely on your own backup of the account key
