About Lightpanda
Lightpanda is a headless browser engine built for machines rather than people. It runs JavaScript but does no graphical rendering, and it is not a fork of Chrome or Firefox. It is written in Zig, and its developers publish benchmarks showing much lower memory use and faster execution than headless Chrome.
It installs with a one-line shell script and needs no signup. It is integrated into several agent and automation frameworks. It suits developers running scrapers, crawlers or AI agents at scale who find headless Chrome too slow or memory-hungry.
Strengths
- Much lower memory use than headless Chrome in published benchmarks
- Built from scratch rather than patched from an existing browser
- Quick install with no account needed
- Already integrated into several agent frameworks
Limitations
- No graphical rendering, so not a browser for everyday browsing
- Pages that depend on full Chrome behaviour may not work the same way
