About LXC
LXC creates lightweight system containers that boot an init system and behave like a small machine rather than wrapping one application, using kernel namespaces and cgroups for isolation. It is the low-level runtime underneath Incus and LXD, and can run unprivileged containers as an ordinary user.
Strengths
- System containers feel like a virtual machine without the hypervisor overhead
- Unprivileged containers run entirely as a normal user
Limitations
- Command-line only; day-to-day management is easier through Incus
- Container images and templates are Linux-only
