About Meld
Meld shows two or three files side by side with the differences linked between panes, and you edit in place with the comparison updating live. Change blocks can be pushed left or right with a click, which is what makes resolving a merge bearable.
Folder comparison identifies missing and modified files across two or three directories, and you drill into any file for the detailed view. Text filters let you ignore differences you do not care about, such as whitespace or timestamps, which makes real changes stand out.
It understands Git, Mercurial, Bazaar and Subversion, so you can review, commit and push from inside it, and it works as a `git mergetool`.
Strengths
- Two-way and three-way comparison of files with live editing in place
- Three-way merge assistance with conflict handling and the base version shown
- Folder comparison that finds missing and modified files across directories
- Works with Git, Mercurial, Bazaar and Subversion, including as a git mergetool
Limitations
- No official macOS build; it is Windows and Linux
- GTK on Windows means it looks and behaves like a port
- Very large files are slow to compare
- Releases are infrequent
