About MeshLab
MeshLab exists because raw 3D scans are a mess. It provides the repair toolkit: hole filling, noise removal, alignment of multiple scans, decimation to reduce triangle counts, normal and curvature computation, measurement, and conversion between a long list of mesh formats.
It is built on VCGlib, the C++ mesh processing library from the Visual Computing Lab at ISTI-CNR, and its filters can also be run as a scripted batch pipeline rather than by hand. That combination of a research library with an interactive front end is why it turns up in photogrammetry and cultural heritage workflows.
Strengths
- A deep set of repair filters: hole filling, noise removal, alignment, decimation and remeshing
- Converts between most mesh formats, which makes it useful purely as a translator
- Filters can be scripted into a batch pipeline rather than clicked one at a time
- Builds for Windows, macOS and Linux including ARM64, plus AppImages
Limitations
- Not a modelling program; you cannot design a part in it
- The interface exposes hundreds of research filters with little guidance on which to use
- Very large meshes will exhaust memory
- Occasional crashes on malformed input are a long-standing complaint
