About MusicBrainz Picard
Picard works album by album rather than file by file, which is what lets it use the MusicBrainz database properly: it matches a folder of files against a specific release, then writes consistent tags, track numbers and cover art for the whole thing.
When the metadata is missing or wrong it can identify files by AcoustID audio fingerprints, matching the actual sound rather than the filename. It handles MP3, FLAC, Ogg, M4A, WMA and WAV among others, supports CD lookups, and has a scripting language for naming and organising files exactly the way you want.
