About NeoMutt

Mutt has always had a patch culture: features people needed lived as out-of-tree patches that distributions applied selectively. NeoMutt was created when Richard Russon collected those old patches, sorted them, fixed them up and documented them, so everyone gets the same feature set from one project.

What that adds up to is a long list: compressed folders, conditional date formats, Notmuch tags and IMAP keywords as custom mailbox tags, encrypt-to-self, a compose message preview, alerts when you forget an attachment, header cache compression, and sidebar and progress bar improvements. It remains a terminal client in the Mutt tradition, with a configuration file that rewards time spent on it.

Strengths

  • Collects and maintains the Mutt patches that were previously scattered
  • Notmuch tags and IMAP keywords as custom mailbox tags
  • Compressed folders, encrypt-to-self and a warning when you forget an attachment
  • Packaged by every major Linux distribution and by Homebrew

Limitations

  • Terminal only, with a configuration file that must be written before it is useful
  • Mutt's keybindings and terminology take real time to learn
  • No Windows build
  • HTML mail needs an external viewer configured
