About Nix
Nix builds each package in isolation from a pure description and stores it under a hash of its inputs, so different versions coexist, upgrades are atomic and a rollback is instant. It powers NixOS and provides reproducible development shells on any Linux or macOS machine.
Strengths
- Atomic upgrades and instant rollback of an entire system or profile
- Per-project development shells that are identical on every machine
Limitations
- The Nix language and concepts are a genuinely steep learning curve
- The store grows large and needs regular garbage collection
