OpenBubbles lets people without an iPhone use Apple's messaging services. It supports iMessage group chats, reactions, replies, edits and unsend, GamePigeon, FaceTime calls and iCloud Shared Albums, with end-to-end encryption. The app talks directly to Apple's servers rather than relaying messages through its own.
Activation needs one-time access to a Mac or an always-online iPhone. Self-hosting is free but does not use your Android phone number; the hosted option registers your Android number for a monthly fee.
Strengths
- iMessage and FaceTime on Android without relaying through a third-party server
- Supports group chats, reactions, edits, unsend and GamePigeon
- Free self-hosted option
Limitations
- Activation needs one-time access to a Mac or an always-online iPhone
- Using your Android phone number requires the paid hosted plan, which currently has a waitlist
- Depends on unofficial access to Apple services
