About pfSense
pfSense Community Edition installs on a PC or appliance and turns it into a firewall and router with stateful filtering, NAT, VPN servers, traffic shaping, captive portal and a package system for extras such as Suricata and pfBlockerNG. Everything is configured through a web interface.
Strengths
- Firewall, router, VPN server and traffic shaping in one web interface
- Package system adds intrusion detection and DNS blocking
Limitations
- Community Edition trails the Netgate appliance builds in release timing
- FreeBSD hardware support is narrower than Linux for very new network cards
