About Podman
Podman builds, runs and manages OCI containers and pods without a long-running root daemon, so containers can run entirely as an unprivileged user. Its command set mirrors Docker closely enough that aliasing docker to podman works for most everyday tasks, and it can generate Kubernetes YAML from a running pod.
Strengths
- Rootless containers with no background daemon to run as root
- Command line is a near drop-in replacement for Docker
Limitations
- Rootless networking and volume permissions behave differently from Docker and can surprise you
- Podman Desktop is a separate download from the engine
