ProcessActivityView attaches to a running process, or starts a new one, and builds a summary of every file and folder that process tries to access. For each file it shows how many times the file was opened and closed, the number of read and write calls, the total bytes read and written, and the DLL that made the last open call.
It works by injecting a helper DLL into the target process to intercept file I/O calls. It needs no installation and has a separate build for 64-bit programs. Official support covers Windows 2000 through Windows 8.
Strengths
- Per-file counts of opens, reads, writes and bytes
- Shows which DLL opened each file
- Can launch a process and trace it from the start
- Command-line options for scripted runs
Limitations
- The published requirements list versions through Windows 8
- Injects a DLL into the inspected process
- Separate builds are needed for 32-bit and 64-bit targets
