About rdiff-backup
rdiff-backup maintains a mirror of the source that is always current, storing reverse diffs alongside it so older versions can be recovered. The most recent backup is therefore an ordinary directory tree, and history costs only the deltas.
Strengths
- The newest backup is a plain mirror you can read without the tool
- Reverse deltas keep history cheap while the current copy stays instant
Limitations
- No client-side encryption
- Restoring very old versions means replaying many increments
