About SharpKeys
SharpKeys does not run in the background, does not install a driver and is not doing the remapping itself. It edits the scancode map registry value that Windows has honoured since Windows 2000, then you reboot and the mapping is part of the operating system.
That design is its whole appeal: the classic fix of turning Caps Lock into Shift, or disabling it entirely, costs nothing at runtime and survives without any software running. It also means the mapping is global and unconditional, with no per-application rules and no tap-versus-hold behaviour. A Type Key button identifies most keys for you so you do not have to look up scancodes.
