About Stoplight

Stoplight is a hosted platform for design-first API work. Teams write OpenAPI descriptions in a visual editor, reuse models and components across APIs, publish documentation and spin up mock servers so clients can be built before the real API exists.

It is aimed at API teams that want one place to keep their API portfolio consistent. Stoplight is now owned by SmartBear, and a free starting plan is offered alongside paid tiers.

Strengths

  • Visual OpenAPI editor that needs little specialised knowledge
  • Mock servers from the API description
  • Documentation hosting and reusable models in one place

Limitations

  • Hosted service that requires an account
  • Focused on teams and organisations rather than individual use
