About Supabase
Supabase builds a backend around a real PostgreSQL database, adding generated REST and GraphQL APIs, row-level-security-based authentication, file storage, edge functions, realtime subscriptions and vector search. The whole stack is open source and can be self-hosted, alongside a hosted plan.
Strengths
- Built on plain PostgreSQL, so data and SQL skills stay portable
- The entire stack can be self-hosted rather than rented
Limitations
- Self-hosting means operating a dozen services rather than one
- The hosted free tier pauses inactive projects
