About Synfig Studio
Synfig Studio takes the opposite approach to Pencil2D. Rather than drawing each frame, you define shapes and their states at keyframes and Synfig generates the frames between them, which is how a small team can produce a lot of animation. It handles vector and bitmap artwork and has a layer and parameter system with linked values.
The project describes itself as an industrial-strength solution for film-quality animation, and the feature list backs that up with bones, skeletal distortion, a sound layer and a render queue. The cost is complexity: the parameter panel and the linking model take real time to learn, and the interface has a reputation for being unforgiving.
Strengths
- Automatic tweening between keyframes, so you do not draw every frame
- Bones and skeletal distortion for cutout-style character animation
- Vector and bitmap artwork in the same project with linked parameters
- Windows, macOS and Linux builds plus Flathub and distribution packages
Limitations
- A steep learning curve; the parameter and linking system is not intuitive
- Stability and rendering speed are long-standing complaints
- Documentation lags the current version
- Frame-by-frame drawing is possible but not what it is built for
