About SystemRescue
SystemRescue, formerly SystemRescueCd, is a live Linux system you boot when the installed one will not start. It carries GParted for partitioning, fsarchiver for imaging, filesystem tools for ext4, xfs, btrfs, vfat and ntfs, editors, Midnight Commander and network utilities including Samba and NFS clients.
It works on Windows machines as well as Linux ones, which is the usual reason to reach for it: mounting an NTFS partition to rescue files off a laptop that no longer boots. Nothing needs installing, though you can install it to disk if you want.
Strengths
- One bootable stick with partitioning, imaging, filesystem repair and data recovery tools
- Handles ext4, xfs, btrfs, vfat and NTFS, so it rescues Windows machines too
- Network filesystem support including Samba and NFS for copying data off
- Requires no installation; boot it and work
Limitations
- A rescue environment, not something you run day to day
- The tools are powerful and unforgiving; a wrong partition command destroys data
- Largely command-line driven with a minimal desktop
- You need to have made the USB stick before the machine broke
