About Universal Media Server
Universal Media Server shares video, audio and images over DLNA and UPnP to smart TVs, games consoles, receivers and mobile devices, transcoding on the fly when a device cannot play a format directly. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and is configured through a web interface.
Strengths
- Transcodes on the fly for devices that cannot play a format natively
- Speaks DLNA, so old TVs and consoles work without an app
Limitations
- Transcoding is CPU-heavy on modest hardware
- DLNA browsing is clumsier than a dedicated client app
