About Whonix

Whonix splits into a gateway virtual machine that talks to Tor and a workstation virtual machine with no direct network access, so even malware with root on the workstation cannot discover the real IP address. It runs inside VirtualBox, KVM or Qubes OS.

Strengths

  • Network isolation survives a full compromise of the workstation
  • Runs on top of an existing desktop through VirtualBox, KVM or Qubes

Limitations

  • Needs a machine able to run two virtual machines comfortably
  • Anonymity still depends on how you behave inside the workstation
