About winget

winget installs, upgrades and removes Windows applications from the command line using the Windows Package Manager repository and the Microsoft Store, and can export and import a machine's application list. It ships with Windows 10 and 11 as part of App Installer.

Strengths

  • Ships with Windows, so nothing needs installing first
  • Export and import a whole machine's application list for rebuilds

Limitations

  • Manifest quality varies and upgrade detection is unreliable for some apps
  • Fewer packages than Chocolatey or Scoop for niche tools
