WinPython is a self-contained Python distribution for Windows 10 and 11. Each build is a self-extracting 7-Zip archive that unpacks to a folder on a disk, network share or USB key; nothing is installed or written to the registry, and several versions can sit side by side.
The slim builds include Spyder, JupyterLab, the Qt stack and data and AI libraries, while the dot builds are bare Python. Free-threaded builds are also offered, and each release publishes a pylock file so the same package set can be rebuilt elsewhere.
Strengths
- Fully portable, no installer or registry changes
- Ships Spyder, JupyterLab and the scientific stack ready to use
- Reproducible package sets through published pylock files
- Bare and free-threaded builds alongside the full one
Limitations
- Windows only, 64-bit only
- Full builds are large, around 670 MB
- Free-threaded builds lack the Qt stack and some binary packages
