 Free

The open-source application is available without a license fee.

Windows, macOS, Linux Windows, macOS, Linux
  • The same editor as VS Code, built from the same MIT-licensed source without Microsoft branding
  • Telemetry is disabled in the default configuration
  • Huge plugin marketplace covering languages and domains other IDEs ignore
  • Entirely open source and free for commercial use
  • Extensions come from Open VSX, so a few marketplace-only extensions are missing
  • Microsoft’s proprietary extensions, including the C# debugger and Remote Development, are not licensed for it
  • The workspace and perspective model feels dated and confuses newcomers
  • Plugin quality varies widely and conflicts are common
