Alternatives to Stalwart

Rust-based all-in-one mail server supporting JMAP, IMAP, and SMTP. The listings below can replace it for an important use case. Each note says what changes if you switch.

Replacements

Listings that take over the same core job as Stalwart.

  • Mailcow

Dockerized open-source mail server suite with web admin and webmail.

Mailcow packages the mail server suite in Docker with a web admin panel and SOGo webmail, but it needs more resources than a single lightweight mail daemon.

  • Mail-in-a-Box

Turnkey open-source script that builds a full mail server on Ubuntu.

Mail-in-a-Box automates a full mail server setup with one script, but it is tied to Ubuntu, while Stalwart is a single Rust server supporting JMAP.

  • iRedMail

Free open-source mail server installer for Linux and BSD.

iRedMail installs a full mail stack on many Linux and BSD distributions through a text-based installer, and it is a long-established project with a larger history than Stalwart.

  • Maddy

Composable single-binary open-source mail server written in Go.

Maddy is also a single-binary open-source mail server, written in Go with a composable configuration model, and has a smaller community and fewer guides.

  • Modoboa

Open-source mail hosting platform with an admin UI and webmail.

Modoboa adds a simplified web admin UI and webmail for running a self-hosted mail platform on Linux, with a smaller community than larger projects.

  • Poste.io

All-in-one Docker mail server with web admin and built-in TLS.

Poste.io runs as one Docker container with web admin, webmail and TLS handling, but it is not open source and larger deployments need a paid license.
