About Android Open Source Project
The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) publishes the source code for the Android operating system along with documentation for setting up a build environment, downloading the source, building, testing and contributing. It is the base that custom Android ROMs start from, and a build from it runs without Google apps.
Since 2026 Google publishes source to AOSP twice a year, in Q2 and Q4, through the android-latest-release branch. Android 17 is the current release. It suits developers and device makers rather than people wanting a ready-made ROM.
