About ArmorPaint

ArmorPaint is a PBR texture painter: drag a 3D model in and paint on it with instant feedback in the viewport. Materials, fill layers and brushes can be built from nodes, so procedural materials and patterned brushes are possible.

It runs entirely on the GPU with its own rendering engine, supports ray-traced baking and painting effects on Direct3D12, Vulkan and Metal, and offers decal layers and a path-traced viewport. Live-link plugins connect it to Blender, Unreal Engine and Unity.

Strengths

  • Node-based procedural materials and brushes
  • GPU painting at up to 16K textures
  • Ray-traced baking on Direct3D12, Vulkan and Metal
  • Live-link plugins for Blender, Unreal Engine and Unity

Limitations

  • Smaller user base and fewer tutorials than commercial texturing tools

Adobe Substance 3D Painter is closed source, runs only on Windows and macOS and needs an Adobe account, but belongs to the wider Substance 3D Collection.

  • 3DCoat

A 3D application for voxel sculpting, retopology, UV mapping, PBR texture painting and rendering.

3DCoat is closed source and adds sculpting, retopology and UV mapping to its PBR texture painting, with a free learning mode but a commercial licence for production.

  • Material Maker

An open-source node-based tool for authoring procedural PBR materials and textures for game engines.

ArmorPaint also uses node-based procedural materials, but its focus is GPU texture painting on models up to 16K, and its compiled builds are paid although the source is open.
