About Material Maker
Material Maker builds PBR materials from node graphs, where each node creates or transforms a texture. It ships with over 200 nodes, and new ones can be made by grouping existing nodes or by writing GLSL. Materials export for use in the Godot, Unity and Unreal engines.
A community library offers hundreds of shared materials, nodes, brushes and environments, and an experimental painting tool textures 3D models with procedural brushes. Releases are published on itch.io and Steam. It suits game developers and 3D artists who want a free procedural material editor.
Strengths
- Over 200 nodes, with custom nodes in GLSL
- Exports materials for Godot, Unity and Unreal
- Large community library of materials and brushes
Limitations
- Texture painting tool is still experimental
- Node-based workflow takes time to learn

Alternatives to Material Maker
Compare allSoftware that can replace Material Maker for an important use case, and what changes if you switch.
ArmorPaint
A stand-alone application for physically based texture painting on 3D models, running on the GPU.
ArmorPaint also uses node-based procedural materials, but its focus is GPU texture painting on models up to 16K, and its compiled builds are paid although the source is open.
Adobe Substance 3D Painter
A commercial 3D painting application for applying textures, materials and masks to 3D models in real time.
Adobe Substance 3D Painter paints materials directly onto models with real-time preview and layers, but it is paid, closed source, requires an Adobe account and runs only on Windows and macOS.
3DCoat
A 3D application for voxel sculpting, retopology, UV mapping, PBR texture painting and rendering.
3DCoat offers a GPU node system for procedural materials alongside sculpting, retopology and PBR painting, but production work needs a commercial licence and the application is not open source.
