dmidecode prints the hardware information that the system BIOS records in the SMBIOS/DMI table. This usually includes the manufacturer, model name, serial number, BIOS version and asset tag, and often the status of CPU sockets, expansion slots, memory slots and I/O ports.
It does not scan the hardware itself, so the output is only as reliable as the BIOS data. Three companion tools ship with it, including biosdecode. It suits administrators and kernel developers who need to identify a machine.
Strengths
- Reports serial numbers, BIOS version and model details
- Shows memory slot and expansion slot usage
- Includes companion tools such as biosdecode
Limitations
- Only reports what the BIOS provides, which can be inaccurate
- Command-line output is long and technical
