About lm-sensors
lm-sensors provides user-space support for the hardware monitoring drivers in the Linux kernel. The sensors command prints temperatures, voltages and fan speeds reported by the motherboard and other chips, and libsensors lets other programs read the same data.
It is the base many Linux monitoring tools and desktop widgets rely on. It suits anyone who wants to check hardware temperatures from a terminal or set up sensor readings on a server.
Strengths
- Reads temperatures, voltages and fan speeds from kernel drivers
- Includes libsensors for use by other tools
- Packaged by major Linux distributions
Limitations
- Linux only
- Command-line output with no graphical interface
- Sensor labels may need manual configuration on some boards

Alternatives to lm-sensors
Compare allSoftware that can replace lm-sensors for an important use case, and what changes if you switch.
inxi
A command-line system information tool that reports hardware, sensors, drivers and system details.
inxi reports sensors alongside hardware and driver details in one command, and also supports the BSDs, but it is not open source.
Vitals
A GNOME Shell extension that shows temperatures, voltages, fan speeds, memory and CPU load in the top bar.
Vitals shows temperatures, voltages and fan speeds in the GNOME top bar instead of a terminal, but works only with GNOME Shell.
Astra Monitor
A GNOME Shell extension that shows processor, GPU, memory, storage, network and sensor readings in the panel.
Astra Monitor puts sensor readings with CPU, GPU, memory and network stats in the GNOME panel, and only works on GNOME Shell.
Plasma System Monitor
KDE's desktop application for monitoring system sensors, running processes and resource usage on Linux.
Plasma System Monitor shows sensors in a graphical KDE window alongside processes and resource usage, and fits best on a Plasma desktop.
s-tui
Terminal tool that graphs CPU frequency, utilization, temperature and power and can run a stress test.
s-tui graphs CPU temperature, frequency and power in a terminal with a built-in stress test, but covers the CPU rather than all board sensors.
CoolerControl
A Linux application for monitoring and controlling cooling fans, pumps and lighting on supported hardware.
CoolerControl reads hwmon sensors in a graphical app and adds fan, pump and lighting control on supported hardware under GPL-3.0-or-later.
lm-sensors as an alternative
Listings that name lm-sensors as an alternative.
Core Temp
Small utility that reads per-core CPU temperature on Windows.
lm-sensors moves CPU and other temperature readings to the Linux command line, open source and packaged by major distributions, with no graphical interface.
Open Hardware Monitor
Open-source reader for temperature, fan and voltage sensors.
lm-sensors is open source and reads temperatures, voltages and fans on Linux from the command line, with no graphical interface.
Similar software
Related functionality, not necessarily a direct replacement.
CoreFreq
A Linux CPU monitoring and tuning tool that reports per-core frequencies, C-states, temperatures and power.
Conky
Display live system information in configurable desktop widgets.
Prometheus Node Exporter
A small agent that exposes hardware and operating system metrics from Linux and Unix machines to Prometheus.
Hardinfo2
A graphical Linux tool that shows detailed system information and runs benchmarks.
CPU-X
Inspect processor, motherboard and system information on Linux.
btop++
A terminal resource monitor that looks good enough to leave open, with processes, CPU, memory, disks, network and GPUs.
